The Neuroscience of Number Sense: Subitizing, Groupitizing, and Math Fluency

We kicked off this year’s Roundtable series with Becky Lord, a former special education and middle school math teacher turned coach, consultant, and course creator, who’s spent over 15 years working to demystify how the brain actually learns math. Becky opened by pointing out something most educators never get trained on: while teachers are in the business of building neural pathways every day, few of us understand how the brain itself processes number. Her session traced that gap directly to classroom practice, starting with the parts of the brain involved in math (the parietal lobe for number sense and spatial processing, the right hemisphere for visual and intuitive thinking) and moving into what that means for how we teach.

The core concept of the night was subitizing, the innate, wordless ability to instantly recognize a small quantity (up to about four or five) without counting, and groupitizing, the related skill of combining subitized parts to read a larger quantity at a glance. Becky showed how structured, two dimensional dot arrangements, rather than scattered dots or straight lines, make this dramatically easier for the eye and brain to process. The takeaway for instruction was direct: when we default to having students count by ones, especially on their fingers, we may be reinforcing an inefficient strategy rather than building the number sense that makes math facts automatic.

Becky also walked through dyscalculia, a math learning difference affecting an estimated 5 to 6 percent of students, roughly one in every classroom, that is still rarely identified in schools the way dyslexia is. She reframed it not as a fixed label but as a spectrum: every student’s number sense falls somewhere on a curve, and a student without a diagnosed disability can still have significant room to strengthen subitizing and groupitizing through targeted, consistent practice. An over-reliance on finger counting past the early grades was flagged as one practical warning sign to watch for.

The session closed with a live demonstration of dot cards used to build addition, subtraction, and combinations to 5, 10, and beyond, all without a single written symbol, reinforcing Becky’s central point that visual and conceptual understanding should come well before symbolic notation.
