2023 - 2024
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

[Math]odology workshops are a unique opportunity for educators to expand and supplement their mathematical practices during the school year. Our programs provide opportunities for exploration as students as well as time to reflect on the learning process as practitioners thus understanding how to make impactful instructional decisions. During the workshops, educators encounter concepts from different mathematical strands and learn various techniques for delivery, questioning, and extensions of tasks aimed at enhancing the culture of the mathematics classroom.

Each session is different so be sure to explore the options to find the right one for you. Contact our team for questions about how our programs might meet your needs.

Lesson Study - Building Perseverance in the Mathematics Classroom

October 23rd-24th, 2023
In Person - Westport, CT

Under the guidance of Dr. Yeap Ban Har and Sarah Schaefer, lesson studies provide teachers with an opportunity to closely observe and reflect on student learning during mathematics lessons.  During these collaborative sessions, teachers focus on the learning that is taking place, rather than on the teaching.  This reflective practice encourages teachers to dig deeply into mathematics learning and refine their own instructional practices accordingly.

The curriculum of the lesson study covers these topics:

  • Lesson Study Overview
  •  Research around building perseverance
  •  Observation of four lessons
  •  Reflection as a practice for improving instruction

Here's what past participants have said about our lesson studies:

“I found it very valuable to see the difference small teacher moves can make in the learning students are able to show in a lesson. We all think we are teaching the same math lessons, but it is very clear to me now that the students are experiencing math differently in each classroom. Also, the chance to pick up on the language and style Ban Har uses when teaching and talking about math is always so beneficial and helps me change my teaching for the better.”

  • Betsy, Grade 3 Teacher, Conneticut

“The lesson study method was very helpful to get teachers talking less about the curriculum specifically and more about what variables impact student learning. I plan to use the lesson study model as a regular practice for our teachers moving forward.”

  • Josh, Mathematics Chair K-12, Texas

“I am so motivated to jump back in next with a rejuvenated spirit and understanding.”

  • Ashley, Grade 4 Teacher, Georgia
"In a typical professional development program, participating teachers expect to receive new knowledge and innovative ideas from the experts of the field. In Lesson Study, however, participants develop their own new ideas for how to best support their students to learn better. They do this through collaboration: by planning, observing, and reflecting on each other’s research lessons. Thus, Lesson Study can fairly be called teacher research."

Developing Mathematical Roots at the Early Childhood Levels (pre-K and K)

December 5th-6th, 2023
In Person-Honolulu, HI

Our two-day workshop focuses on blending early childhood education with the formal classroom while incorporating essential elements of purposeful play.

This workshop will help early childhood educators decide how to make purposeful play the focus of mathematical learning during the early ages. Through the use of learning trajectories, we offer background knowledge around each and examples of activities that can be modified to meet the learning needs of all. The goal for the two days is to share and observe practical mathematical lessons that embed purposeful play and child-centered pedagogy in the early childhood classroom while ensuring high-quality mathematics instruction.

The workshop covers:

  • how play is the solid foundation for learning mathematics at the early childhood level
  • what is meant by a mathematics learning trajectory across four BIG ideas
  •  the development of mathematical lessons that are meaningful, enjoyable, engaging, iterative, and socially interactive
  • observations of lessons that incorporate exploration, playful practice, and hands-on learning in the kindergarten classroom
  • how to incorporate choice in promoting agency in the mathematics classroom

Workshop Details

Day 1
8:00 am - 2:30 pm

• Number and Operation trajectory

• Development of playful activities to support each learning trajectory

• Observation of a  kindergarten lesson

• Building shelves for independent play

• Reflection

Day 2
8:00 am - 2:30 pm

• Measurement and Geometry trajectory

• Development of playful activities to support each learning trajectory

• Observation of a  kindergarten lesson

• Assessment techniques

• Reflection

Here's what past participants have said about our workshops:

"I feel rich with math sense and ideas and can't wait to open up this treasure box of discovery with my students."

  • Lysa, Kindergarten Teacher, Maryland

"When working with younger groups of kids, I think the purposeful play aspect is not only a great addition to a curriculum but absolutely necessary! I love that this math curriculum allows students to explore on their own a bit rather than just sitting them in front of a workbook."

  • Judy, Pre-K Teacher, Delaware

"The true passion that the presenters deliver makes my teacher's heart sing! It is so helpful to hear honesty so freely. I feel so inspired after spending valuable time practicing as a teacher and student. I am motivated by the classroom setup to run back home and make my classroom that is engaging for my students."

  • Cheri, Kindergarten Teacher, Ohio

“The critical and divergent thinking that children practice in play and problem-solving contribute significantly to the higher level thinking skills they will later need”

• Jones and Reynolds, p. 89
